Paardencrematorium Westerhout was officially opened on 4 October 2008. Martien van den Heuvel, chairman of the KNHS (the Royal Dutch Equestrian Federation), and Paul van Eerden, founder and proprietor of Paardencrematorium Westerhout, were the first to drive through the gates of the crematorium. After this ceremony Martien van den Heuvel officially opened the estate. In his opening speech, he stated that Paardencrematorium Westerhout is a real asset to the equine lovers in the Netherlands; an ultimate form of service, which was awaited for a long time by many horse owners.

During the opening, people could admire a sand sculpture of two horses in the euthanasia room. The British sculptor Andrew Baynes created two impressively realistic horses out of eight cubic meters of sand, which left an imprint in the memory of many guests.

Art will have its own place in Paardencrematorium Westerhout: several expositions of horse related artwork will be held here. Interested people who pay a visit to the art gallery will also be able to take a look at the crematorium.
